Tips to Choose Skin Lightening Products

In the hot climates of Asia, Africa and South America, media as well as people favor fair and light-skinned people. This has led to spiraling of demand for skin lightening products. Also, the pigmented skin starts becoming hyperpigmented, and this means more usage of skin lightening products. 2 out of 5 Asian women use skin lightening products. Besides the leading brands, there are smaller operators that manufacture their products in their homes. Since whitening products are treated as cosmetics, there are no rules governing them or those that govern them are not strict.

The users of these products in these countries use international, premium quality whitening product because they are safe and harmless. But after some time, they realize that their money has been wasted on products whose active ingredients are so diluted that they do not yield any results. As a result, they get frustrated and switch over to cheaper and uncertified skin lightening products that offer instant results.

These cheaper skin-lightening products yield quick results, but in the long run they have to pay a very high price. They can cause permanent skin damage or organ damage or skin cancer in worse cases. This is due to usage of dangerous active ingredients like hydroquinone and mercury. These ingredients, especially hydroquinones are very cheap and hence are used extensively in these products.

Mercury or hydroquinone will whiten the skin in the beginning by stopping the production of melanin. Once the melanin is not produced, there won’t be any brown pigmentation and this gives the instant lightening effect. But their long-term effects are unknown. Mercury or hydroquinone can lead to blotchiness, uneven skin tone, burns skin easily, peels off skin, more hyper pigmentation, thickens skin, large pores, itchiness, redness, dark patches, light pink patches, and premature aging symptoms like lines and wrinkles.

Also both hydroquinone and mercury are carcinogenic chemicals that lead to skin cancer, if used for a long time. They have also been shown to cause liver and kidney failure and destroy the nervous system. If you are pregnant and use these chemicals, your baby will be born brain-damaged and malformed due to mercury poisoning.

Many countries like UK and US have banned the use of mercury in skincare products. UK has banned the use of hydroquinone since 2001 and now some Asian countries like Malaysia are following the suit. US allows the over the counter sale of skincare products that contain 2% of hydroquinone. But this has not deterred the unscrupulous manufacturers from importing and using these products illegally.

If you do not see the ingredients listed on the products or if there is no certification from the local cosmetics regulation board are the warning signs that these skincare products contain these toxic chemicals. So when you go to buy the skin lightening or whitening products, ensure that their constituents are listed on the package. Ensure the product is certified by the cosmetics regulation board where it is manufactured.
