How to Make Dreads
Learning the process of making dreads is a complex procedure. Most of the times, the information available online, is conflicting thereby worsening the confusion. Here we show you 4 primary ways of making dreads.
1. Natural Method –
It is the oldest method of getting dreads. To learn this method of getting dreads start by washing your hair with residue free shampoo and avoid brushing your hair. Nearly all hair varieties will natural dread once the hair becomes about 6” long. You might have to opt for little amount of the Rip and Tear Method mentioned below to help dreads retain a certain size and to prevent the top of your head from matting.
2. Twist and Rip Method -
The job of splitting and tearing your hair is not as painful as it sounds. You are just distorting a dread size piece of hair very tightly and then separating it in 2 parts and pulling down each of then. Repeat the process. You can begin by separating your hair (as described below) followed by twisting and ripping to strengthen the dread.
3. Backcombing Method -
The hair is placed in a dreadlock position by backcombing it. It is achieved by partitioning the hair and then chafing the comb towards the root from the hair ends. Normally people want partitions about an inch in diameter, but find out what is best for your hair type (thick, thin, fine, etc) to learn the method of making dreads the correct size for your hair. Use a grid type pattern for dividing your hair, or doing it in a more haphazard natural way and simply selecting sections as you proceed.
4. Waxing Method -
It is the only method that needs a product in your hair. Basically, you will backcomb your hair or rip and tear your hair and then apply wax to keep your hair in place to promote dread growth. If used rarely, wax is fine, but it is unnecessary for anyone to use it. Research this method properly, if you consider it the best method for your hair.
In the initial 3 methods, you can wash your whenever you want, provided you use residue free shampoo. Without washing your hair, you will not get dreads, since dreads like clean hair. The process of making dreads is lengthy, but worth the effort. Spending more time in learning this process will teach you new things.
