How to Clean Dog Urine
Your dog will return to a place that has urine and feces smell. So a rapid and proper clean up of any accidents is important to quick housebreaking. Here are few steps on how to clean dog urine:
1.
Let dogs out regularly, particularly puppies.
It may be irritating but it will save your time and effort. Remember, each time the puppy eats, sleeps or plays it will have to go outside. Also provide the dog/puppy plenty of praise for doing it's business in correct place.
2.
Be strict and steadfast.
It will confound a dog if it just gets scolded for dirtying the floor at times. It will learn quickly if it is scolded each time it dirties the floor. Only thing is give it some love after some minutes of scolding.
3.
If you can't stay with the dog, leave it on hard floors.
It means preventing the pooch from entering the kitchen or foyer with a baby gate. Keep Wee-Wee Pads with the dog. They are small absorbent mats designed with an attractant that dogs love to whizz on.
4.
Locate the dog urine with a black light.
Many pet stores and online retailers sell hand held black lights solely for this job. Simply switch off the lights and carefully search for the bright shine of urine. Cleaning dog urine is more difficult if you can't locate it.
5.
Prepare a poultice.
For fresh urine: Patience is vital. For carpet with pad below it, it is essential to clear the urine from the carpet and the pad. If the spot has been damp for over 10 minutes the pad will be wet as well. You will require fresh cool water, thick cotton towels and some type of weight of 5 to 10 pounds. Weights may be books, boards, steel workout plates, etc.
6.
Apply the rules of capillary action to clear the urine from the carpet and pad.
If done rightly it will always work. Begin by keeping a folded towel bigger than the spot above the spot. Keep a flat board over the towel and keep a weight on the board. The board divides the weight equally on the towel, in case there is no board available, simply keep a weight on the towel but ensure the towel is sufficiently thick to prevent the urine from reaching the top of the towel and coming in touch with the weight. The towel must remain in place for minimum 10 minutes.
7.
Grab the first towel and keep a clean one ready.
Fold it similar to the first. Sprinkle some clean water at the place, begining from the rims of the spot to the middle of the spot to prevent the spread the urine, the water spot will be slightly bigger than the urine spot. Let the water work it's way into the carpet. It will just take 30 seconds to a minute. Keep a clean folded towel over the water spot and put the weight again over it. Now wait for at least 30 minutes for the urine to be soaked into the towel. Don’t move the towel or it will disturb the wicking action. Again repeat this entire process using 1 part water and 1 part white vinegar and allow the towel and weight to remain overnight. Remove in the morning and allow it to dry. There will be no smell once the carpet dries up.
8.
Wash the towels nicely.
Retain old clean towels for this purpose.
9.
Use the services of a professional for any major problem areas.
If you want to try this yourself ensure the affected area is small, not more than a foot in diameter. For anything bigger, hire a professional. It can be costly so compare the cost of the service against replacement cost and remember that while the odor can be handled the stains will remain forever. Also you can do this in various ways. The execution is just like the first section but the chemistry will differ.
