Exercises for Stronger Hands
 
 

In typical gym training, grip training is the most overlooked aspect of the training. However grip training, is very important if you are participating in strongman competition. This is because your hands connect you to the item you are lifting. As the strength of the chain depends on its weakest link, increasing grip strength will increase your other lifts.

Grip training is fun and addictive. Always train your grip through various angles: strengthen the fingers, build up crushing strength and increase wrist strength. Here are few exercises that will let you develop stronger grip.

Brick and Broom Lift

It is a fun exercise as it sounds very easy on first hearing how it is done.

Take a broom with wooden handle. Keep the broom on the ground such that it is lying flat. Put a brick on the brush side of the broom. Now try to raise the broom off the ground such that one of your hands is holding the edge of the broom maintaining the broom parallel to the floor. Your wrists will experience the stress. It is an excellent exercise, since the weight can be changed.

After mastering this exercise, go on to using sledgehammers in this exercise for increased difficulty.

Pinch griping

Pinch gripping is ideal for making the fingers stronger. Developing better pinch grip will assist you catch things moving rapidly through your hands.

Place 2 standard weight plates of identical size adjacent to each other with smooth edges facing outwards. Next, try to lift them from the floor by pinching them, using the fingers and thumb of one hand and then repeat with other. Begin by using 25 lb. plates, followed by 35, 45, etc. Though challenging, doing it frequently will lead to excellent results.

Hand grippers

Hand grippers are excellent for building crushing grip. Ironmind is a producer of good grippers, they are effective in checking the limits of crushing trength.

Farmers Walk

The farmers walk will check your hand strength. Avoid straps. Lug for distance a heavy weight in both hands.

Use farmers walk tools but if they are not available, 2 heavy dumbbells will also work.
